This work presents a detailed numerical analysisregarding the NDT (Non Destructive Testing) magnetic techniques of ferromagnetic cylindrical objects as wire ropes. Both 2D and 3D non-linear magnetostatic analysis have been performed. The adopted 2D technique is based on FE (Finite Element) formulation while the 3D analysis is based on FIT (Finite Integral Technique) approach. The two numerical approach are required in order to study different aspects of the NDT problem. In the first part of the paper a procedure for the design of NDT device is presented while in the second one different kinds of rope damages are simulated in order to estimate the accuracy of the magnetic NDT technique.
