This paper shows several influences grey iron plates (chills) and SiC-plates (chills) have on poured rectangular grey iron plate (EN-GJL-250) relating to surface defects, microstructure and hardness. The result of these examinations show that the SiC-plates have a smoother chilling effect and give a better surface finish on the casting because they do not create condensation water. What this paper demonstrates, with the aid of two practical examples of large hand moulded castings is the application of the two types of chills and the effect on solidification and surface hardness. It also shows using trials on a rotary furnace, that broken SiC-plates can be used as a Silicon addictive. This paper demonstrates the advantages of using SiC-plates and that not only the purchase price but the whole cost-effectiveness of a product has to be taken into consideration.
