EVALUATION OF NEWLY DEVELOPED SUGARCANE GENOTYPES AT VASANTDADA SUGAR INSTITUTE, PUNE CENTRE

Newly developed 15 midlate maturing sugarcane genotypes were raised in a Randomised Block Design having two replications with two standards and evaluated in two plant and one ratoon crop for their productivity and quality characters during 2002-03 and 2003-04. Out of these, 11-5 [CoVSI 9805] and 5-43 genotypes behaved significantly over Co 86032 standardfor cane and sugar yield in plant crops and 11-5 in ratoon crop. Periodical quality analysis indicated that the genotypes 11-5, 19-8 and 5-48 recorded highest sucrose % juice and CCS% at 11th and 12th months of crop age in plant and ratoon crops. A genotype 11-5 developed from poly-cross of Co 8371, is with the good agronomic characteristics, like maximum cane yield, medium to thick canes, non-lodging, non-flowering and good ratooning ability. The pooled analysis indicated that 11-5 [CoVSI 9805] gave increase of cane yield and sugar yield by 11.46% and 16.16% respectively over Co 86032.
