A number of foundries in South Africa (SA) are jobbing foundries, meaning that they produce a large number of different castings based on received orders [1], Due to the nature of business, the success and sustamability of local foundries depend on their ability to provide castings of high quality at the minimum cost. This means that SA foundries need to adopt quality systems and strategies that are cost-effective and allow the production of casting of high integrity [2], Production of good quality castings will enable South African foundries to gain operational competitiveness and access to worldwide market. The traditional quality control in sand moulding foundries based on the sand testing employed in most SA foundries have limitations in terms of efficacy to avoid casting defects.
