It is the dream of human beings to create machines, which possess human like intelligent attributes for taking decisions in shop floor. Intelligent Induction furnace is a furnace that learns and can solve problems by reasoning and inference. Intelligent furnace is one that can perform a task in the presence of variables. Intelligent controller is any control system that can deliver a degree of human-like response to stimuli. The various tools and techniques used for imparting intelligence to machines are neural networks, genetic algorithms, expert systems, evolutionary computing, case-based reasoning, fuzzy logic, vision systems, CCD cameras, sensors and actuators, cybernetics and holonic systems. In the present work an induction furnace of gray iron foundry has been considered for development of procedure and measurement (estimation) of FIQ. Two more alternative induction-melting systems (modified and intelligent) are also considered for measurement (estimation) and comparison of FIQ. From the existing literature it is found that no research work seems to have been done in this area (induction melting systems). Hence an attempt has been made to develop a procedure for estimation of FIQ for three different induction-melting systems. This work is considered to be useful for comparison of FIQ for different furnaces manufactured by several manufacturers in the real world scenario.
