Development of New Field Installable Optical Connector

We have developed a new field installable optical connector, which is suitable for use in aerial closure in FTTH (Fiber To The Home). Since the connector has a pre-polished single fiber ferrule and a splicing mechanism, it is easy and convenient to assemble the connector in aerial field. The connector has a socket type used for a fiber and two kinds of plug types; one is used for a drop wire and the other is used for a fiber. Assembly tools have been also developed for the connector. The tools are designed in compact (in one-hand size) and lightweight so that operator can carry and use it easily in aerial field. The optical characteristics are examined. The results indicate that the connector has an excellent performance to use as a field installable optical connector in aerial closure.
