HRMS Analysis of Naphthenic Acids Isolated from Heavy Crude Oils using Ion Exchange and Solid Phase Extractions

For the low TAN crude oil sample, IE and SPE fractionation allowed observation of polar species such as O_3, O_4, NO_2, O_3S, O_2S that were not detected by direct analysis of the whole sample. Interestingly the IE method extracted highly aromatic O_2 species (DBE 8-20), from the low TAN crude oil, not observed in the SPE extract. IE and SPE extractions were not selective for the isolation of N, N_2 NO and O species from both oil samples.
