According to the Taiwan herbal pharmacopeia, Gastrodiae rhizoma (Tian ma in Chinese) is the dried tuber of the orchidaceous Gastrodia elata Blume. It is a perennial parasitic plant with Armillaria mellea and valuable medicinal herb before cultivated technology successfully. Gastrodiae rhizoma (GR) has traditionally been used for the treatment of several conditions including inflammatory, headache, migraine, dizziness, epilepsy, neuralgic and nervous disorders since ancient times in China. Some articles also indicated it has neuroprotective effects. The main components of GR have been demonstrated including phenolics, furan types and nucleosides. Above those constituents, the phenolics compound, gastrodin, is considered to be the basis of the quality of GR. Its pharmacological effects have been confirmed such as anticonvulsant, antiepileptic, sedative and analgesic effect. A series of parishin characteristic compounds which constituted by citric acid, gastrodin and gastrodin glucoside were also under investigation in this study.
