This paper addresses the beneficial role that proper repair practices play in the overall reliability of critical machinery within a plant. We briefly discuss the traditional viewpoint that many people hold of machinery repairs as well as the apparent disconnect between a dynamic reliability initiative and the normal approach to equipment repairs. In bridging this gap, we explore a shift in viewpoints that research the value that a reliability approach to the repair process offers. Some of the topics discussed in this "Business-based Maintenance Philosophy" are: 1) Traditional views on motor repair. 2) Implementing a comprehensive Motor Management initiative. 3) The role that proper repair specifications should play in the repair process. 4) The role that root cause analysis should play in the repair process. 5) Optimizing preventive, predictive and corrective interval frequencies. 6) Managing equipment health. 7) Achieving the true partnership relationship that must exist between the plant and their outside motor repair provider(s).
