LARGE-SCALE PV PROJECT BUSINESS IN EUROPE A PROMISING FUTURE MARKET SEGMENT?

In the last two years, the large-scale PV project market in European countries has been impressive, displaying a high growth rate. According to the findings of the EuPD country market surveys, the years 2007 and 2008 seem to have set a new record for large-scale PV plants in Europe. In this segment, we expect a market volume of about 550 MWp in 2007 and for 2008 of about 630 MWp. This market development is reflected in the average compound annual growth rate of the European project planning companies (e.g. turnkey providers), growing faster than most of the other market participants along the value chain. However, clouds are appearing on the horizon. The future of the two major markets for large-scale projects, Spain and Germany, is highly insecure. Implemented and planned modifications to the feed-in tariffs in both countries cast doubt on their position as the most attractive markets for MW plants. On the other hand, new stars will arise. Italy and Greece are in the starting blocks to take over the European leading positions in the field of large-scale PV plants. But, do these markets have the potential to continue the growth history of the European large scale business? And how will the market participants react to these developments? The presentation provides answers to the above mentioned questions. EuPD Research will give an overview of the European PV project markets (Germany, Spain, Italy, France) and its participants. The analysis is based on an extensive elicitation of primary data among project planning companies. The results are complemented by the combination of in-depth interviews with solar experts and economic analysis as well as company-specific investigation.
