Nanofiber Manufacturing Processes for Filtration Media

Nanofibers are generally defined as fibers with diameters below 0.5 microns (500 nanometers). Due to such small diameters, nanofibers have generated a tremendous amount of interest in filtration. Experimental data have shown that nanofibers can improve filtration efficiency at advantageous pressure drops. As a result, nanofibers show great potential as one tool for higher performing media in many applications. In this paper, different nanofiber manufacturing techniques will be discussed, including electrospinning, meltspinning, and multi-component systems. The relative advantages and disadvantages of each manufacturing process will be discussed. In addition, special consideration will be taken to discuss the utilization of the different nanofiber products in filtration applications.
