Craftsmanship Across the Cornfields: A Survey of Midwestern Covered Bridges

Three master builders created signature creations. Although none were professionally trained, they showed an understanding of how their bridges worked that has allowed them to stand to this day. All three crafted fine arches connected with sophisticated, long lasting joinery. The Kennedys built aesthetically refined portals that are works of art, while Daniels and Britton preferred more of a “neat, clean finish.” They all showed a sophistication in the types and variety of fishplates they employed in the lower chord, one of the most critical parts of the bridge. Daniels and Britton also demonstrated an ability to artfully incorporate new materials like iron in creating long lasting structures.
