The efficiency and robustness of both 1-D and 2-D TLDs have been investigated experimentally. Properly designed TLDs, with damping screens, can achieve efficiency levels approaching 90% and maintain an efficiency level of over 80% over a wide range of response amplitudes. These are favourable findings. The concept of a band of effectiveness was investigated both experimentally and numerically. Tests were conducted to study the effectiveness of a mistuned TLD. These results were subsequently used to determine the performance of a TLD attached to a structure whose stiffness may differ from that assumed in design. Findings show that the best tuning strategy is one that provides sufficient effective damping over the range of expected structural frequencies of a building. If properly designed, 1-D and 2-D TLDs are economical efficient and robust dynamic vibration absorbers, which require limited head room and minimal long term maintenance.
