During the last decades surface coatings have gained a lot of functionality reaching from protection against mechanical and chemical abrasion to optical issues. Due to the recent developments of nanotechnology the possibilities have significantly widened. By generating nanostructured surface coatings a huge variety of new characteristics like self cleaning or easy-to-clean properties, self sterilization, improved scratch resistivitiy and completely new optical behaviour have become feasible. The secret of material improvement by nanotechnology hides in the application of nanoparticles. Therefore the three steps of generating functionalized nanosurfaces are: Nanoparticleproduction → Depositing of nanoparticles → Aftertreatment.
