Recent advances in hydroisomerization technology have made possible the production of superior base oils of very high Viscosity Index (VI) and oxidation stability from highly paraffinic waxes such as those from Fischer-Tropsch (FT) catalysis. The production of base oils from FT wax over the next several years, however, will be limited. A new process has been developed for the conversion of polyethylene waste plastic into lubricating base oil similar to that derived from FT wax. In addition to providing a potential source of high quality base oil, the process also addresses a growing environmental issue.
