Lateral Shear Performance of the Wooden Post Beam Structure with Prefabricated Small Mud Shear Walls

A new type of shear wall system, which was composed of traditional post & beam timber frame structure and various small size prefabricated mud shear walls (PMSW) was developed by considering suitable use of our domestic soft wood timber Sugi (Cryptomeria : Cryptomeria japonica D.Don). Shear performance of frame structures without any wall elements was first evaluated, then, small size (524 mm x 565 mm x100 mm), PMSWs were inserted into the frames for giving shear resistance. In total, five different types of shear wall configurations were prepared and examined by static push-pull cyclic lateral shear test using specimens of 1820 mm long and of 2330 mm height. Weight of PMSW prepared in this study was about 25 to 26 kg and it was not so light to handle them by one person, thus the weight should be lighter. Increase of stiffness of the wall system was almost proportional to that of numbers of PMSW. Hard wood key of 16 mm square was not strong enough for preventing pull-out failure at leg joints. Some reinforcements werereinforcement was thought to be necessary for getting satisfactory wall system.
