An atmospheric approach is proposed to validate the atmospheric correction over water. The latter combines the MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) with a ground-based instrument, i.e., the CIMEL radiometer from the AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET). The idea is to evaluate all the atmospheric scattering functions needed to perform the atmospheric correction. The inputs to our approach are provided by AERONET, after inverting the radiometric measurements (i.e., Sun extinctions and sky radiances), and the successive orders (SO) of scattering code is the radiative transfer code (RTC) employed in this study. This new concept for the atmospheric correction validation has been illustrated by using the MERIS level-2 data extracted from the MERis MAtchup Insitu Database (MERMAID) over the Acqua Alta Oceanographic Tower (AAOT, Venice - Italy).
