Recent studies have shown that rotorcraft carefree maneuvering algorithms can alleviate structural loads and improve rotorcraft mission capability. This paper presents the Bell-Agusta BA609 as a case study for using systems engineering to implement a multi-disciplinary carefree maneuvering system. Outcomes and lessons learned are presented for each step of the process, including requirements definition, design synthesis, test and evaluation, and certification planning. The case study shows that an effective aircraft simulation model is essential early in the development program to accommodate requirements definition trade studies. When structural design criteria and systems specifications are developed through systems engineering best practices, structural limit cueing and active load alleviation can be implemented within a fly-by-wire system to satisfy aggressive performance and certification requirements.
