Validation of High Fidelity Helicopter Simulation Models: An A/MH-6M Case Study

This paper presents a process for helicopter flight training/mission rehearsal simulator development and validation that optimizes the incorporation of pilot subjective input. The distinct roles of pilot as objective data supplement vs. evaluator are defined. The appropriate planning of each type of pilot involvement helps to minimize the risk of unanticipated model design changes late in the development process. Illustrative case studies from CAE's recent development of a high fidelity full-flight A/MH-6M combat mission simulator for the U.S. Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) are presented. Guidance is provided on the validation of retreating blade stall and off-axis response. Possible objective measures for off-axis response fidelity in both time and frequency domains are explored.
