Although 2-propenal chemistry1 has been commercially available for many years for several applications in the oil and gas production industry2-6 and is well known for its efficacy as a biocide7-8 until recently it has not been widely used on offshore oil production platforms due to safety concerns with the chemistry. Recent advances in chemical application hardware have allowed the use of 2-propenal on offshore oil production platforms with a lower level of risk than conventional biocides. This paper compares 2-propenal vs. conventional biocides applied on an offshore oil production platform, with respect to chemistry efficacy, injection hardware requirements, and associated risk elements (identified by the platforms risk assessment teams risk assessment process).
