At the CANDU facilities, spent fuels are transferred to interim dry storage. There are 300 canisters at the Wolsung site. Each canister can store up to 540 spent fuel bundles. In recent years about 40 canisters are loaded annually. At this rate of transfer, existing dry storage capacity will be all used up by the first half of the year 2009. Construction of the MACTOR/KN-400 was promoted as a substitute for the limited dry storage space. A MACTOR/KN-400 module is consisted of 40 storage cylinders and a cylinder can contain up to 600 spent fuel bundles. For discussion of its safeguards features, a working group was proposed at the IAEA-ROK 13~th Joint Review Meeting. Through working group meetings~[1], the following items were confirmed: sealing arrangements, design of the verification tubes and collimator positions of the tube. As construction of the MACTOR/KN-400 has already begun, storing of spent fuel should commence in November, 2009.
