This study builds on the current knowledge of stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) systems, with particular attention to maximum power point tracking and the potential use of power point tracking to increase power output in these systems. A side by side comparison between two types of (PV) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) charge controllers and a standard fixed voltage charge controller for a stand-alone residential PV system is presented. Charge controllers were tested under various operating conditions in order to measure the efficiency of the MPPT controllers and to quantify the increased PV system output, if any, associated with MPPT.
