Seabed gouging by ice has for a long time been seen as a serious threat to marine pipelines. Initial attention focussed on observed gouge depth statistics and estimation of an extreme gouging depth, beyond which a pipeline was supposed to be safe. That simple view is incomplete and under-conservative, unfortunately. In the article we attempt to prioritise the outstanding questions that confront the designer.
