An improved dynamic model of PM synchronous machine is proposed to provide more accurate simulations in drive and control applications. The previous phase variable model developed by these authors considers the slotting effects on the inductances and the back emf with the core loss ignored. In the improved model, the instantaneous core loss is included by using a rotor position dependent resistance, which is obtained from transient finite element solutions. Simulation experiments were performed on a six-pole 2-hp surface mounted PM motor. The effects of the iron loss on the torque and current waveforms are investigated.
