As the photovoltaics industry becomes more and more mature, the production is in the transition from pilot (low volume) to high volume. In the pilot production, the main focus was on cell efficiency (cell concept). In high volume production, the equipment set, the degree of automation and the production technology get an equivalent importance. Therefore the triangle of efficiency (cell concept), yield and production line utilization (throughput) has to be optimized to guarantee the economic success. In the presentation the impact of efficiency (cell concept), production yield and production line utilization on the production costs will be reviewed. Market requirements for efficiency/price relation will be identified. Based on these reviews, design and technology criteria for new solar cell production lines will be derived.
