Temporal Variability of Residual Current at the Head of Ariake Bay

Bottom mounted ADCP observations were conducted to figure out the residual current over the head of Ariake bay. The upper layer residual current is analyzed and the cause of its variation is estimated by multiple linear regression analysis. The result is tested by MEC numerical model. The results of the regression analysis and that of the model are consistent except the influence of the river. In this study, it is shown that the residual current field over the head of Ariake bay is strongly modified by the tide, river flow, and the wind. In addition, it is shown that there exists a seasonal variation in the response characteristics of residual current to the wind.
