The contribution of native arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) on growth and P influx of maize and groundnut was examined in a low P soil. Eradication of AM by benomyl reduced early growth of maize and groundnut by 40 % -50 %. Phosphorus supply affected percentage of root infected by AM which was 40 % in the roots at low P and decreased to 10 % at high P supply in both the crops. P influx of maize was dependent on P in soil solution early in the growing season whereas the effect of AM was large later. In groundnut, P influx was found to be related to P supply; the degree of AM infection had no influence.
