The North African countries as Algeria, Egypt and Libya, have a total proven natural gas reserve base estimated to be around 7400 Bcm, equivalent to 4.4% of global proved reserves. However, the demand for natural gas from these countries is relatively small compared with this reserve base. Some of the countries in Southern and South-Eastern Europe have limited natural gas resources but are now showing significant potential and rapidly growing demand for natural gas. This has spurred a number of proposals for new gas export projects from North Africa, including pipeline and LNG projects.
