DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SOUTH AND NORTH OF INDOOR AIR POLLUTION IN CHINA

In this study, Beijing, Harbin, Changsha and Guangzhou are used to represent of the north and south city in China.A direct approach was used to measure carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), benzene, toluene,formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide and ammonia (NH3) pollutants in residential buildings in these cities. The average concentrations of the indoor air quality of residential home obtained from our measurement survey data, together with building background data obtained from questionnaires were used to predict indoor air pollution situation.The results showed that Chinese people of different place were exposured in different pollution. In the south cities of China, homes were shown to be one of the major exposure sites to NH3 and formaldehyde for all age groups. In the north cities, homes were shown to be one of the major exposure sites to NH3, formaldehyde and organic compounds such as benzene, toluene etc. for all age groups. This study is one of the pioneering studies with valuable contribution for investigation of exposures to indoor air pollution of different people in the south and north of China and points out the major pollutants relating with peoples' life habits and climates, so the author suggests that different methods should be adopted to control indoor air pollution.
