A new-type of gymnasiums are being built with a rise of health consciousness in Japan. In the Tohoku District located in the northern part of Japan, we have to take its severe climate (its very cold winter and hot and humid summer) into consideration when we design buildings in general. The gymnasium reported here makes use of the radiation panels in order to stop as much air current as possible in heating and cooling. Especially, the air in summer is cooled using cold well-water. This paper describes the results from the questionnaires to the users, the temperature and humidity measurements, and the measurements of energy use in summer. Although air-conditioned gymnasiums using refrigerators are general, it became clear that this gymnasium with the radiation panels is overwhelmingly more advantageous concerning air current and energy conservation. The air current measured there was not an obstacle to any kind of sports. The authors hope that this method will be widely used in hot and humid areas in Asia from now on.
