An innovative design for improving the air quality in elevator cabinet was fabricated and examined in this study.The novel design integrated two slim vertical air ducts modified from the sidewalls, and an air filtration unit upon the ceiling. The new cabinet design was found to considerably reduce the particle and viable microorganisms concentration. Removal test of viable microorganisms with different number of passengers, and cross-contamination test between the passengers subject to different distances were conducted. The results indicated that the well organized flow pattern, the filtration unit upon the ceiling and the buoyancy-assisted air movement created by warm human body and hot respiratory air were the most important factors to remove the contaminants from the hoist way and passengers.
