GENERATION OF SUB-MICRON PARTICLES AND SECONDARY EMISSIONS FROM BUILDING MATERIALS BY OZONE REACTION

This study reports the effects of reactions between ozone and building materials as secondary emission of sub-micron particles and VOCs by two different experiments. Firstly, building materials as reagent-grade d-limonene, EPS, natural rubber adhesive, cedar board, and silver fir board, which contain VOCs known as react with ozone fast enough to compete with ventilation, were set into the 20L stainless chamber, ADPAC and exposed to ozone. When ozone was exposed to reagent-grade limonene, cedar board and cypress board, sub-micron particles in size of 0.01μm to 0.5μm were generated by reactions. Secondly, plastic tile with waxing were set into the 20L chamber, ADPAC and exposed to ozone and sub-micron particles and VOCs were measured. The number of 0.01 μm-1.0μm size particles grew about 50×108 particles/m3 and the emission rates of heptane, nonane, nonanal, decanal were increased after the ozone injection. This study suggests potentialities of generating sub-micron particles and secondary emissions in indoor environment by ozone-building materials reactions.
