A Genetic Algorithm with Small-World Features

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of small-world networks in combination with a genetic algorithm for system design. For several years we have been developing techniques for optimizing engineering design using soft computing methods. This was inspired by piping design problems involved in shipbuilding. In this paper we describe a tool for general system design. The emphasis is on evolving a population of solutions that are connected using a "small-world" network. We have evaluated this technique on some typical engineering design problems
