摘要

Remote sensing is a widely used technique to determine the presence of oil on water. There is growing evidence that small amounts of oil, integrated over time, can cause an environmental impact on the marine aquatic system. In order to assess this threat, it is necessary to understand the ability of various remote-sensing systems to detect the presence of thin layers of oil. Detection limits, based on a combination of theory and experience, are discussed along with their implications to both oil-spill response and pollution monitoring.
