Digitization of the battlespace will require the specification and accommodation of legacy and new military communication systems, which involve many complex communication mechanisms and protocols. It is necessary to verify their logical behavior and to evaluate their performance in order to minimize overall cost. In the domain of communication systems, several powerful tools are available for modeling and simulation. Focusing on the application of OPNET in modeling and simulation (M&S) of military communication networks (MCN), this paper introduces the key features of OPNET and its way to model and simulate, and then discusses the trends in M&S of MCN and the corresponding supports provided by OPNET, and concludes that the selection of OPNET as the core simulation engine to M&S of MCN is appropriate.
