Nowadays a major part of commercial wireless short-range mass production applications operate in the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band. In mass production, minimizing of all the manufacturing costs is one essential key to get the maximum profit. Therefore low-cost general-purpose antenna solutions are widely used in high volume products. Wireless systems are used in various environments and sometimes antennas need to be attached close to problematic material, like metal or liquid. Because the performance of wireless system depends greatly on antenna performance, it is important to know how general-purpose low-cost antenna structures work in challenging environments. In this study, we have focused on examining the effect of metallic plates on antenna performance of four basic antenna types. We studied how antenna's matching impedance and ability to receive power behaves as a function of plate distance.
