Role of Dongpinghu Detention Basin in Flood Control of Lower Yellow River

After completion of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir, there still exists a possibility of major floods occurrence in the lower Yellow River, therefore, the Dongpinghu Detention Basin has become a key project for the safety of the lower reaches against flooding and plays an important role in regulating and storing flood water from both the Yellow River and Wen River, controlling the discharge at Aishan station less than 10,000 m~3/s and guaranteeing safety of Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, Jinpu Railway, Shengli Oil Field, lives and properties of millions of the people residing along the Yellow River. With successive construction of flood control structures, a flood prevention engineering system has been further improved, nevertheless, there remain some problems to be resolved, only so, the regulation and storage capacity of the basin can be fully put into use.
