As a new technology of rapid metal tooling, the hybrid plasma and laser deposition manufacturing (PLDM) was proposed. In this process, Laser beam was used as assisting heat energy. In order to study the influence of laser to plasma arc character and shaping property in PLDM, the combine deposition system was used; High speed CCD camera was adopted to obtain the plasma arc pictures, and then the sketch of picture was gained through dealing with by a special software developed by ourselves. The results show that laser will bring about a plasma arc compression effect, decrease the diameter of plasma arc beam, increase the depth of molten pool, diminish the width of molten pool, and the precision and strength between layers are advanced markedly.
