The pulp and paper manufacturing industry is continuously becoming more global with companies having customers and mills around the world. Most of the large pulp and paper companies today have mills in the developed world, but often also in the developing world. Particular parts of the industry are shrinking, especially in certain geographies. Mill closures and machine retirements have been rampant, forcing companies who remain in business to realign capacity with markets, in a world of rising input costs yet downward pressure on volumes and prices.
