Since 1913, approximately 2,000 natural gas wells have been drilled in the Canadian waters of Lake Erie, which lies in the northwest section of the Appalachian Basin. Currently, 530 wells produce 30 million cubic feet per day from the Guelph, Grimsby and Whirlpool zones, and account for approximately 67 per cent of Ontario's total annual gas output. In 2004, 20 new gas wells were drilled on Lake Erie. Total gas produced from Canadian waters is estimated to be more than 0.4 trillion cubic feet.
