HEAT TRANSFER CALCULATIONS IN A UNIVERSITY COGENERATION LABORATORY

California State University, Sacramento has designed and built a cogeneration laboratory which is used for instruction and small research projects. This laboratory has a gas turbine engine, a waste heat boiler, an absorption chiller, two condensers, a condensate cooler and a chilled water to air fan coil. In an effort to better use this laboratory for instruction in heat transfer, heat transfer analyses were done on the boiler, condensers, condensate cooler and fan coil. All calculations are done using a computer spreadsheet and are designed to make the operation of the devices clear to students. The outputs of the calculations are presented in graphical displays using both the spreadsheet graphing capability and diagrams created by varying cell display formats.
