The EU Directive relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise will make noise mapping mandatory for large cities. However, up to now, little attention has been paid to the expectations of the cities and the citizens towards noise mapping. Therefore, in the frame of the European Life project ? GIpSyNOISE ?, 14 cities (partners of the project) and a small size sample of people were first surveyed in 2003 about the information to be provided by noise maps (content – presentation - communication methods etc) and their uses for their own decision making. Divergences and convergences between the expectations of the cities and those of the citizens are discussed. Further to discussions with cities partners, sets of maps and tables were defined taking into account the requirements and the general expectations of the EU Directive as well as the specific expectations of the cities and the citizens. An additional questionnaire sent to city-partners in January 2004 validated the relevant set of maps and tables. These tools provide a cartographic and graphic representation of the expectations. In the next months, a set of noise maps will be presented to a group of citizens for final validation.
