Rohm and Haas research has concentrated on making emulsion polymer-based nanocomposites for decades. This work has resulted in particles with nano- dimension structural features, such as Opaque Polymers, Hollow Sphere Pigments, and a number of heterogeneous emulsion products used as binders in many application areas. Recently, Rohm and Haas has been investigating unique polymer/clay nanocomposites based on film forming latexes. These nanocomposites display unusual toughness properties without compromising the film forming ability of the latex. After a survey of important emulsion polymer nanocomposites, this talk will address our recent work. A description of our polymer/clay nanocomposites as well as NMR and microscopy results from the characterization of these materials will be presented.
