Protection of metal substrates from harsh chemicals and/or conditions associated with exterior exposure is an important and rapidly growing coatings market. The maintenance marine and industrial maintenance markets are in excess of $1.5 billion/year and expected to be $1.77 billion in 2006. The focus on improving the performance of the existing technology to extend the life time of the coating is one way of reducing or controlling the rising maintenance costs associated with the marine and industrial applications. The modification or replacement of urethane binders with unique epoxy functional silicone resins has increased UV resistance and chemical resistance of industrial coatings. The new silicone compounds are addition-curing materials, which do not require a moisture curing process. The replacement of the Si-OC bond with a Si-CCC bond increases the coatings ability to withstand attack from harsh chemicals such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid and ammonium hydroxide. In addition to chemical resistance, the more hydrolysis resistant version increases the UV resistance of the coating, which is a requirement for protection of substrates in industrial and marine applications.
