In many steel-producing countries, the demand for metallurgical coke exceeds domestic production requiring importing of coke. Recently, a significant reduction in the availability of coke for export has forced coke prices to an all-time high. Since coke is a key resource required for steel making, the coke scarcity and resulting high price is resulting in record high steel prices. CR Clean Coke is a new process that can produce metallurgical-grade coke from waste carbonaceous fines. It has the ability to increase the world coke supply and provide a high quality fuel for steel-making and other industries. The process does not require high-grade metallurgical coals but accepts lower-grade coal and even waste coal fines blended with byproduct coke material and chars. Bench and commercial-scale testing has been performed which indicates that the process is capable of producing coke that meets the most stringent industrial requirements. In addition, preliminary economic studies have been completed which show potential savings in production costs of 30% or more over traditional metallurgical coke-making methods. The closed-loop, continuous nature of the process allows it to be environmentally responsible, having the ability to produce coke with minimal emissions, by-products and waste. Production equipment for the process is readily available and the process is simple compared to conventional coke ovens.
