Direct Tasking of Space Imaging's IKONOS High Resolution Satellite At Thailand Regional Operation Center

Thailand IKONOS Regional Operation Center (ROC) is an IKONOS satellite ground receiving station located at Lad Krabang, Bangkok, Thailand. At present, there are more than 9 ROCs world wide. These ROCs form the Space Imaging's Global Network providing capability for each ROC to directly task and receive images from the satellite in real time. Since its installation in December 2002, Thailand Regional Operation Center has been continuously collecting IKONOS high resolution images of Southease Asia, covering an area of 2,300 km in radius from Bangkok that includes 16 countries from South and Southwest of China in the north to Sumatra and Borneo Islands in the south, and East of India and Sri Lanka in the west to Philippines in the east. IKONOS data of southeast region can be faster delivered to users for many applications such as Large Scale Mapping, Infrastructure Planning, Environmental Monitoring, National Security etc. IKONOS satellite is unique in its combination of qualities. It is an agile satellite that can be controlled to take images front, back, left, and right of its nadir path. Besides, it is also able to do tasking while either in, or out of direct contact with the ground station. This paper is to give an overview of the operation at Thailand Regional Operation Center, including Customer Service Center, Satellite Control and Tasking, Communication and Image Processing, Sensor Payloads, Mission Planning, Image Collection, Direct Tasking and Post Pass Tasking etc.
