Levels of selected microelements in hypertensive subjects

The aim of this study has been to assay serum iron, copper and zinc levels in hypertensive subjects. Serum copper level has been found to be significantly higher (p<0,001) in hypertensive subjects, serum zinc level was lower in hypertensive males (p<0,001) and iron level was slightly elevated in hypertensive males and females as compared to healthy subjects. In most of the study subjects the levels of analysed microelements were within the range of normal values, except for zinc whose level exceeded the reference values in 80% of healthy males. The obtained results seem to indicate that copper and zinc metabolism is disrupted in hypertensive subjects.
