The bioreactor landfilling approach has received increasing attention as a promising alternative to conventional solid waste disposal practices. The most significant benefit of the bioreactor landfill is a greatly enhanced waste stabilization rate. Most research in bioreactor landfills has focused on the decomposition of cellulosic organics, as well as the associated methane production and leachate quality. Some researchers have also examined the nitrogen treatment capacity of the bioreactor landfill. Although both the presence of many trace chemicals, particularly regulated contaminants, in landfills and the serious impact of these chemicals on landfill-related environments, such as groundwater and the atmosphere, have been well documented, relatively limited studies have specifically focused on the fate and controlling mechanisms of these compounds in landfills. Furthermore, some fate studies were designed considering only the conventional landfilling practices. Due to the fundamental design and operating differences between conventional and bioreactor landfills, it is important to develop a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of the bioreactor landfilling approach on contaminant fate and transport. A critical review is therefore conducted to systematically screen for existing applicable data, identify data gaps and research needs, and develop important engineering perspectives on this issue.
