High arsenic groundwaters at Hangjinhouqi of Hetao plain were investigated. The major hydrochemical types of most saline groundwaters are Cl-HCO3-Na-Mg and Cl-Na-Mg. By contrast, fresh groundwaters generally belong to HCO3-Na-Mg type. High concentrations of As in shallow aquifers are associated with strongly reducing conditions, evidenced by high concentrations of DOC, dissolved Fe, dominance of As (Ⅲ), relatively low concentrations of NO3 and SO4, and occasionally high content of dissolved CH4.
