Bremsstrahlung radiation from electron + Hg atom collisions is a significant IR loss mechanism in HID lamps running at higher (> 10 bar) pressure. This radiation mechanism is even more important in UHP or Ultra High Pressure (> 200 bar) Hg lamps, since the continuum from these lamps completes the color balance in the red. Zolweg et al. [1] performed the most comprehensive study to date of bremsstrahlung from HID lamps. Bremsstrahlung radiation from UHP lamps is getting renewed attention due to the increasing importance of these speciality lamps in LCD projection systems, e.g. see Koerbcr et al. at this meeting [2]. IR losses from general purpose HID lamps are receiving renewed attention under the ALITE II research consortium. Bremsstrahlung radiation from e" + Hg atom collisions dominates both bremsstrahlung and recombination radiation from e" + ion collisions because of the low (-10" ) fractional ionisation in HID lamps.
